Earlier this year, I had the joy of attending a 3-day photography retreat with

Ina J Photography in Bright, Victoria — and I wanted to share a little about it with you.

The Perfect Setting

Bright, Victoria, is truly a paradise for nature admirers and photographers alike. Enveloped by the majestic Australian Alps, the town bursts into color during autumn. The retreat took place in a cozy lodge, where fellow pet enthusiasts came together to share stories, tips, and our love for our four-legged friends.

Exploring the Trails

We spent our days wandering through tree-lined streets and riverside trails, chasing that vibrant autumn colour that Bright is known for.

And in between all of that? Lots of laughter, dog cuddles, and the occasional muddy paw print on my jeans.

Capturing these candid moments is essential for pet photography. I learned the importance of patience and being ready for the unexpected, as the best shots often come when least anticipated.

Connecting with Fellow Pet Lovers

Beyond the photography, the retreat fostered a genuine sense of community. I connected with fellow pet lovers who shared my enthusiasm for both photography and animals. We exchanged heartwarming stories about our pets and our favorite locations for shooting. This camaraderie was uplifting, reflecting the shared bond among pet photographers..

Capturing the Essence of Autumn

As the sun dipped low, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I took a moment to reflect on all we had experienced. I felt incredibly grateful for the chance to blend my love for photography with my passion for pets in such a breathtaking setting.

Not only did the retreat enhance my skills as a photographer, but it also reinforced my appreciation for the special connection we share with our pets. Each photograph I captured serves as a joyful reminder of the happiness they bring into our lives.

Final Thoughts

For me, the retreat was more than just professional development — it was a reminder of why I do what I do. Dogs don’t just fill our lives; they colour them in, just like those autumn leaves. My biggest takeaway? It’s those fleeting, in-between moments — the head tilts, zoomies, and quiet snuggles — that tell the most powerful stories.

While the retreat was about learning and growth, it left me even more inspired for my own sessions back here in Adelaide. I can’t wait to bring that extra spark of creativity to the dogs (and their humans!) who step in front of my camera.

A big thank you to Ina from Ina J photography in Canberra for hosting the workshop. I cannot wait to go to the 2026 Bright retreat!
